Peter Garrett sets the record straight on marine park plans

Plans for future marine sanctuaries  have been subject to a vicious grassroots misinformation campaign during this election.  There have been claims of Green/Labor preference deals seeking to undermine fishing in Australia.  The truth couldn’t be further from the lies.

Plans for a network of marine protected areas around Australia were started under the Howard Government and have been running for a decade. Until the recent highly opportunistic election campaign supported by Tony Abbott that has been targeting and inciting concerns amongst fishermen, the process for identifying and establishing new marine parks and marine sanctuaries had enjoyed bi-partisan support.  Peter Garrett has been competently continuing the science based process, with the process on the brink of a thorough consultation phase when the election arrived.

Here Peter Garrett speaks to Fishing World to answer some of the misinformation and unfair criticisms leveled at the current Government on this issue.
