A great new website I’ve just discovered and have to share. A distillation of all the evidence you need on why marine sanctuaries are needed for marine conservation, how they can complement the sustainable management of fisheries, and how they can benefit recreational fishing.
“There have been marine sanctuaries in Western Australian waters since 1987. These initial sanctuaries were smaller than the larger and more effective sanctuaries we see today, but helped pave the way for the science that was needed to test the effectiveness of sanctuaries. Today there is a huge, worldwide, body of evidence that conclusively proves, well managed sanctuaries benefit the animals that live in them and the people who live near them. Nowadays, some of the best fishing spots in WA are within and around the marine parks that have the largest areas in sanctuary zones – such as Ningaloo, Shark Bay, Geographe Bay and the Rowley Shoals.”
